Telling your money story helps to CHANGE your money story

Thinking about money makes me feel powerless.
I was told “get a career so you can get a high paying job” and “I’ve been with this company for (x)yrs and I’ve connected with the right people to set my paying price.”
From that story, I have learned learned that money means you have the right connections and skills to get a higher than average paying job and that your time/persona has a high value.
The pressure of this narrative shows up when I tell myself that I’m not good enough before anyone else gets the chance. I’ve been hesitant to learn new skills and get out of my comfort zone. It’s also cost me my authenticity/identity/higher potential.
Today I want to believe that sharing my gifts and heart desires and connecting with the right people and earning a living by doing so is possible.

I’m not selfish if I prioritize my own financial future.
When I think about money, I feel shallow and materialistic.
I learned that money means power and greed. This is a story that was passed down to me by my parents and by their parents before them.
This story has protected me from being ungrateful for what I have, but it has also cost me opportunities to prioritize my own financial needs.
Today, I want to believe that it is not selfish or bad to have enough and plan for your own financial future.

My money story protects me from overspending but…
When I think about money, I feel blind. I learned that money is a control mechanism to get what you want. I learned this money story from watching people buy nice things at the mall, and I could not. The story that money is a control mechanism has protected me from overspending, but it’s also cost me by blinding me to how to be self-sufficient and get off government assistance. Today I want to believe that I can produce money for my bills and money for things that are clean and nice is possible. -Anonymous
I’ve always been an idiot around money
What is one of the money stories you’ve learned?I learned that I’m an idiot when it comes to money. I know I SHOULD be able to figure these things out, but I just never do....
I’ve always been an idiot around money
What is one of the money stories you’ve learned?I learned that I’m an idiot when it comes to money. I know I SHOULD be able to figure these things out, but I just never do. I’ll always be dumb when it comes to money. What is that story trying to protect you from?I guess it’s trying to protect me from making mistakes. Failure. Keeps me from sticking my neck out too. What is the aftermath of that story?Well I always feel like a failure, which is frustrating. I get it. This message is supposed to help me avoid failure but I ALWAYS feel like a failure. And it’s meant that I’ve stayed in relationships and jobs far, far too long because staying was safer than the big unknown. Who might you share this story with?My mom. I know I got a lot of these messages from my parents, and I assume they got the same programming too! Expansion around your storyIt feels like I’m always learning ( ans relearning) that I can trust myself. The new version of the story I’ve figured out is that I can feel safe from failure by being gentle with myself. But being gentle and patient with myself is way harder than just defaulting back to shaming and failing myself. -Hanna

My partner doesn’t take our finances seriously.
What is one of the money stories you’ve learned?
My partner isn’t taking our finances seriously.
What is that story trying to protect you from?
I’m not sure. He really doesn’t seem to care. I know this is a story I’m telling myself, but he is constantly reinforcing it!! Ok so if the story is that he isn’t taking money seriously, I guess I keep telling myself that so I take things seriously because he’s not.
What is the aftermath of that story?
I’m always blaming him, I get that. But what else am I supposed to do? If he would just sit down and listen or look at the many spreadhsheet’s I made, he’d see what I’ve been talking about. I’m not just frivolously spending all the time, I really am trying to just keep our household going. And because he’s avoidant, it all falls on me. I’m exhausted and trying to beat my head against the wall.
Who might you share this story with?
I don’t know. Even writing this here is a lot.
Expansion around your story
I mean, I get it… what if I’m wrong about him not taking it seriously?
